How are summer camps organized? How does it work?
Summer camps can be organized in any number of ways. In fact there is a much wider variety of camps than there used to be. In large part this is because it is now common to offer camps that are more specialized than in the past. Because of this there is also more variety in the way camps are organized than there used to be.
Most camps are run by some sort of organization that offers the camp as a part of its larger mandate. In many cases these are religious groups but it also includes other organizations like the Boy Scouts. It is the main group that is responsible for setting up the camp and getting it organized. Beyond that the actual set up will vary to some extent from camp to camp although the basic outline is usually similar
The camp will normally have a director who is responsible for the over all running of the camp. There will also be employees who are responsible for the essential parts of running the camp like food service and maintenance. The campers themselves will supervised directly by councillors. The kids will be organized into groups who will normally all sleep in the same hut. This group will have a councillor assigned to them for their direct supervision. Depending on the size of the groups there may be additional councillors to assist the head one. In most cases the group will participate in activities together.
There will also be councillors in most cases who specialize in teaching certain activities. For example if the camp offers canoeing there will be a councillor who is an expert in the field. In most cases the groups main councillor will supervise the daily schedule of the campers while the expert councillors will provide the actual lessons that are required for the activities that are to be performed.
One of the trends that has become quite common summer camps these days is to specialize them. Rather than just a way to get back to nature and enjoy the outdoors most camps will teach specific things. For example your child may go to computer camp if they are interested in computers. The more general camps do exist but they are becoming less and less common. In the camps that teach specialized skills it will be necessary to have councillors who have the skills.
The daily routine at camps is usually pretty varied so there is no way to say for sure how a camp will be organized. In general the day is broken up into sessions in which the kids move from one activity to another. For example they may spend an hour horseback riding and then move on to arts and crafts for an hour. The evenings usually involve activities that include the whole camp allowing the group to spend time together as a whole.
