Is a weight loss camp the same as a summer camp?
Given the number of kids these days who are overweight it will probably not come as a surprise to learn that more and more kids are going to weight loss camp. A lot of parents are not really sure what this entails or how it is different from a regular summer camp. The differences are minor but important.
In most ways a weight loss camp is the same as a summer camp but there are some important differences in the way that they operate. At most weight loss camps the kids will have the chance to participate in the same kind of activities that kids at other camps do like hiking, swimming, canoeing and arts and crafts. In order for the kids to get anything out of the camp they have to enjoy the experience so the camps do usually offer the same activities that you would find at other camps.
Another reason that most weight loss camps offer the same activities as a summer camp is that most of them are great exercise. One of the goals of the weight loss camp is to get the kids to exercise and to teach them that it can be fun. Most of the activities that are done at camp are quite physical and provide excellent exercise so they are usually included in the program. The kids will gain little from spending time in a gym being forced to work out, fun activities like swimming and hiking are much more useful.
Where weight loss camp does differ from summer camp is that the diet of the kids will be much more strictly controlled. At most camps this is not something that they worry about too much but it is obviously important at a camp where the kids are trying to lose weight. That means that the food served will be healthier and in smaller portions. There will also be less of an opportunity for the kids to get access to junk food.
The other big difference between weight loss camp and summer camp is that some of the time will be spent teaching the kids about healthy eating and exercise. This is normally done through classes that designed to teach them what they need to know. Obviously this does take some time away from the other activities but usually this is limited to just one class each day.
One of the other differences for a weight loss camp is that in most cases it will last longer than other camps. The reality is that there is not going to be much chance to lose weight by attending camp for a week. Most kids will spend most of if not the entire summer at a weight loss camp, this is the only way to seriously reduce their weight.
