What do the opponents have to say about summer camps?

Summer camp is a popular option for a lot of kids and many go every year. However there are quite a few parents who do not like the idea of sending their kids to camp. There are several reasons for this and opponents of summer camps have come up with a wide variety of issues.

The biggest opposition that people have about summer camps is the worry about the children's safety. This is not really something that you need to be too concerned with but there is always a small risk. The main concern of most parents is that fear that one of councilors may be unsafe to be around children. While this is rarely an issue in the few instances when it does happen it gets a lot of attention which obviously makes parents very nervous.

The other big issue that a lot of parents have with summer camps is that most of them have a religious component to them. Many camps are affiliated with a church or other religious group and the children will normally be exposed to the teachings of that group. This is something that a lot of parents don't want their children to be exposed to since they likely have different religious beliefs. In most cases the camp will tell you up front if the have a religious affiliation so you will be able to make a decision about whether or not it is a good option for your child.

Another concern that is starting to crop up is that a lot of camps are becoming very specialized, too specialized some would say. One of the downsides of this is that the experiences that the children have will be limited. This is especially true when it comes to the children they will be around. If the kids are only exposed to people who are just like them they are not getting the whole benefit of going to camp. The highly specialized nature of most camps also means that the kids are missing out on a lot of the activities that many people associate with going to camp.

One of the most interesting criticisms of summer camp is that the excessive concern with safety has taken all of the fun out of camp. A lot of activities that used to be regular parts of going to camp are no longer offered. Not only does this mean the children miss out on many fun activities but it also means they miss out on a lot of the character building that usually comes with going to camp. While obviously nobody wants to expose children to excessive risk the attempt to remove all risk that they could get hurt has seriously reduced the activities that are available at camp.
